Chapter twenty-nine

Peyton Manning Rookie Card

Murray groaned and rolled over. The morning sunlight was like a laser in his eye. He rolled over and tried to ignore the morning, but it was there, nagging and tugging at him to get up.

As he planted his feet on the floor, he almost absentmindedly thought he’d see his wife, Paula. In his mind, she would be wearing baggy jeans and a loose flannel shirt. Her gardening outfit. Spring was dedicated to her tomatoes and mint growing in the little garden, harvesting what she could have bought for three bucks at a Safeway.

Instead, there was nothing there. Cancer had taken her. If it had been a drunk driver, he would have had someone to channel his rage to. Cancer didn’t have a face that he could punch. The disease didn’t have a crotch to kick. It simply existed. Murray missed her, and that longing gave him an anger that constantly sought an outlet. If she were alive, she would be saying, “I thought you weren’t going to come home drunk anymore,” in that drill instructor tone of hers. As much as he hated that tone, he wished he could hear it one more time.

“I’m going through a rough patch, or haven’t you noticed?” He spoke the words as if she were really there, scolding him.

Getting up, he brushed his teeth and rubbed his beard stubble. He went into the kitchen, ignoring the stack of dirty dishes for the sixth time, loaded up the coffeemaker with ingredients, and sat down at the small table. He turned on his police scanner and sighed, waiting for the Maxwell House to finish brewing. Murray’s head seemed to groan, a slow steady pain that came from the alcohol he had consumed the night before.

Then he heard it. A 10-51 and 10-67, wrecker needed and reporting a death. They described the car, and he knew who it belonged to.

I know that license plate! It’s Jack’s!

He listened to the location, and it was on some country road outside of the city.

They’d been drinking at a different VFW last night, to throw off anyone trying to find them, be it the police or the people tied to the Weldon chick. Nobody there knew them, but welcomed them as fellow warriors. Jack had been talking about moving away from Indianapolis. He said the town gave him the creeps. Murray felt a twinge of guilt.

Damn it! This is all Percy’s fault. Worthless piece of shit. Dumbass dweeb couldn’t hold a menial job. He spends all of his time on the internet and now it’s coming back to haunt him—and Jack paid the price. Why the fuck did I agree to help him?

If he was going to kill someone, it should probably be Percy.

He dipped his head down, closed his eyes, put his elbows on the table, holding the back of his neck as the hangover spiked his brain. The scanner reported the ambulance being dispatched. There was no hurry. Jack was dead.

The old coffeemaker finished,
